Staying Safe with Technology

Every day children are using technology at home and school. The Internet is becoming one of the most widely used learning tools. Children in school are receiving regular lessons on online-safety to encourage them to think about their own safety while online. The children’s use of the Internet is closely supervised while at school. Attending our Online-Safety talks and talking to your children about the SMART rules below will help to keep your child cyber-safe.

Smart Safe
Stay safe by being careful not to give out personal information to people on online.

Meeting
Meeting someone who you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ permission and only when they can accompany you.

Accepting
Accepting emails, instant messages or opening files and pictures from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!

Reliable
Information you find on the internet may not be true, or someone online may be lying about who they are.

Tell
Tell your parent, carer or an adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.

CEOP – this is short for Child Exploitation and Online Protection

The Click CEOP button (pictured above) is an asset of the National Crime Agency’s CEOP Command. The CEOP Command works to protect children from the harm of sexual abuse and exploitation both online and offline.

The button has been developed to offer children, young people, parents/carers and professionals working with these groups with a simple and convenient mechanism for gaining access to trusted online safety advice, help and support. It also provides access to an online mechanism for reporting known or suspected child sexual exploitation or child sexual abuse directly to CEOP. This is offered as a convenient and potentially less intimidating method of reporting these sensitive types of crime, alternative to face-to-face and telephone reporting to local police forces.
