Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Intent

At Millfields First School the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts, values and challenge. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning. We believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.  We promote positive attitudes to learning which reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.

Links with parents and the community is an essential part of our curriculum. Children leave the school with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.

Ambition, possibilities and outdoor learning are the drivers for our curriculum. We are ambitious for the children and encourage the children to be ambitious for themselves, partially through the opportunities offered to them as part of their cultural capital where we try to show them the possibilities which are open to them. The curriculum we offer the children is greatly enhanced through our outdoor provision of Forest School where children develop specific Forest School skills as well as making links to other subjects.
